The story
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a universe in possession of sentient life must be in want of a celestial bureaucracy. Free will is a messy, unpredictable variable, and destiny is far too important to be left to chance. It requires management. It requires paperwork.
The Sodality of Delegates are not the gods of poetry or passionate myth — they are gods of process, a divine middle-management team running the cosmos from a celestial office park where a Greek temple seems to have had a regrettable one-night stand with a 1990s Department of Motor Vehicles. Their scriptures are ledgers, their hymns the staticky drone of an overworked intercom, and their most sacred act is the meticulous pairing of soulmates — performed with all the romance of a quarterly tax audit.
These fated pairs, the Soulbonds, are the lynchpins that hold reality together; the most crucial are deemed “load-bearing,” propping up the whole magical order. For millennia, the Department of Soulbond Auditing and Investigations has proudly maintained a perfect record. There has never been an error.
Until, of course, there was. And like any great bureaucracy, when a problem of this magnitude arises, it is first addressed not with a miracle, but with a memo.
